Jets' Holmes gets benched in 4th quarter of loss

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Receiver Santonio Holmes was on the bench during the Jets' final desperation drive Sunday. But he didn't look desperate to get back on the field.

Holmes, who went without a catch in the game, was in the first huddle of the drive but spent the latter part of it on the bench, getting substituted by Patrick Turner, who went on to catch the Jets' final touchdown of the season, as the Jets lost, 19-17, to the Dolphins.

Cameras from CBS's broadcast caught what appeared to be Holmes in a verbal confrontation with teammates before he was taken out. Turns out, Holmes' attitude hasn't sat well with the team all year, according to the Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas.

"It's tough for the guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner," running back LaDainian Tomlinson reportedly said after the game.

Holmes wasn't paying attention to what was going on while on the bench, and he seemed to be sulking -- something fans and players weren't pleased to see from their "captain."

Ryan told the media Holmes took himself out of the game, but Holmes told the media it was "coach's call." Multiple media outlets later reported that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was the one who took out Holmes.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Holmes and Schottenheimer had a telling non-confrontation outside the team's locker room.

"After the game, Holmes stood in a hallway waiting to walk into a press conference room when Schottenheimer, wearing jeans and a dress shirt, emerged from the coaches’ changing room with a rolling suitcase," Mehta reported. "The offensive coordinator walked toward Holmes, who looked away."

Mehta also reported unnamed players said Holmes "quit" on them.

It will be a long offseason for Rex's Jets.
