Fred Jackson was the NFL's leading rusher entering Week 11 before the Bills tailback went down to a season-ending injury.
At the time, Jackson was supposedly next on the list for a contract extension after quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick got his $59 million extension during the team's bye week. Jackson hopes his contract situation gets resolved in the near future, though the 30-year-old fifth-year back still has a year on his deal.
"Well obviously as soon as possible, but we’ll see what happens with that," Jackson told reporters Monday. "Like I said, I’ll just put faith in (GM) Buddy (Nix) and see what happens. But, you know, the sooner it happens for me, the better for myself."
According to BuffaloBills.com, Jackson had a midseason conversation with Nix in regard to his contract but hasn't talk to Nix recently.
"You know, we haven’t talked at all," Jackson said. "So, you know, they’ve had a lot that they had to take care of so we’ll see where it stands. Hopefully I’ll get a phone call soon or something like that. We’ll see what happens."
When Jackson was lost to injury, second-year tailback C.J. Spiller regained the starting role he originally had at the beginning of his rookie season, and Spiller didn't disappoint. Now, the Bills have to make room for two guys they think could lead their offensive backfield.
"I expect to go back to playing the way I was," Jackson said of how Spiller affects his role. "We’ll see. (Spiller) made plays. He’s a playmaker without a doubt but I also felt like I did enough to show what I’m capable of doing and we’ll see what happens. But, you know, we’re going to need both of us to play well to win football games.
