The Jets had less than half a million dollars in salary cap space earlier this week.
They have a lot more now.
By converting $9 million of tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson's $9.985 million 2012 base salary into a signing bonus, the team created $7.5 million worth of cap relief this season. The NY Daily News first reported the adjustment, which was confirmed by the team Thursday.
Ferguson is entering the third year of an eight-year, $73.6 million deal. According to ESPN New York, the cap value of Ferguson's bonus will be spread throughout the remainder of his contract.
Ferguson, the fourth-overall pick of the 2006 draft, has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons.
