Sun Life has some work to do to be 'Super' again

BY SEAN DONOVAN

If Miami ever wants to host another Super Bowl, it needs some serious upgrades to its football stadium, according to some recent statements by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Citing increased competition from the newer venues across the country, Goodell said that older stadiums must "raise their game" in order to be selected to host the coveted championship game.

This gives Dolphins CEO Mike Dee and majority owner Stephen Ross powerful incentive to renovate the increasingly antiquated Sun Life Stadium. Miami has hosted the Super Bowl 10 times.

Recently, a $250 million transformation project updated some amenities and improved the fan experience, but problems remain. Among the issues that the stadium has is poor lighting for HD broadcasts and inadequate protection from the elements. The latter was a huge problem in the 2007 game, when a downpour left the lower levels paritally empty.

The organization has a unique opportunity to improve the stadium now that the Florida Marlins have their own stadium. The building was originally designed in 1985 to hold both sports, and ownership now has the freedom to build lower level seats. This will also increase the intimacy of Dolphins games and create a better experience for the fans.
