Jets retain free agent priority in nose tackle Pouha

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Jets have been in need of a positive since the middle of last season. For Gang Green, Monday was a step forward.

New York retained arguably the most productive nose tackle of 2011 in Sione Pouha, who was the Jets' top free agent priority of the offseason.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pouha signed a new three-year deal, likely making the 33-year-old a Jet for the rest of his career.

"This is something I've always wanted," Pouha told reporters Monday. "I'm going to be a Jet for life."

The 325-pound run-stuffer recorded 117 combined tackles over the past two seasons, including three sacks and a safety.

Pouha didn't really make much of a splash until later in his career, not even earning a starting gig until 2009 when nose tackle Kris Jenkins went down to injury.

"I guess if you look at it statistically, by snap counts or what have you, you could look at it that I'm a younger 33," Pouha said. "I'd like to think I'm 23 and act like I'm 23. But yeah, I do feel like I'm a young 33."
