Naanee, 29, underwent a physical and medical evaluation to assess a broken foot that he sustained in the final game of last season. He was medically cleared to participate in NFL workouts for the first time since the injury.
After spending his first four seasons in San Diego, Naanee spent 2011 with the Panthers, where he caught 44 passes for 467 yards and one touchdown in 15 games. Toward the end of the season, Naanee saw his playing time cut back in favor of Brandon LaFell due to poor performance and penalties.
According to Pro Football Focus, Naanee was the worst wide receiver to step on a football field last season, earning the lowest cumulative grade of any of the 200 players who were on the field for at least one snap.
Based on that performance, Miami fans shouldn't expect to get more than a sparingly-used back up and special-teamer out of the physically gifted Naanee. He may, however, fit better in Miami's new west coast offense rather than the vertical passing games of Cam Newton and Philip Rivers.
The Chargers drafted Naanee out of Boise State in the fifth round of the 2007 draft hoping that he could develop in to an H-back role, where his rare combination of size and athleticism could create mismatches at the receiver, fullback and tight end positions. He barely saw the field in his first two seasons and wasn't very productive when given a larger role.
