Fans, friends, family paddle-out in Seau's memory

BY SAM HOLLINGSWORTH

Junior Seau, the long-feared NFL linebacker who tragically died last week at 43, was known for a lot of things.

His hard hits. His impeccable leadership. His unparalleled work ethic. His intimidation. His competitive spirit. His love for his family. His giant smile.

He also loved to surf.

Born and raised in California, Seau went on to spend the majority of his professional career playing for the Chargers. He also played for the Dolphins and Patriots in the latter years of his career, but he never stopped surfing.

Just days after the news of an apparent suicide shocked the sports and entertainment worlds, Seau was honored with a surfing paddle-out on the water right outside of his Oceanside, Calif., home that consisted of more than 1,000 attendees.

Surfers chanted Seau’s name and jersey number as they gathered in the ocean.
