Gilmore looks like a starter as Bills release Florence

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Stephon Gilmore might have earned a starting job quicker than we thought.

Friday, the Bills announced the release of veteran cornerback Drayton Florence, who started the last three years for Buffalo.

"I want to thank Drayton for all he’s done for our team during his three years in Buffalo," Bills general manager Buddy Nix said, according to the team's website. "But we have some good, young talent at the cornerback position that has tremendous upside. They need to take as many of the reps at practice as they can to continue to develop that talent."

In steps Gilmore, who was drafted at No. 10 overall out of South Carolina last weekend, as part of a defensive backfield that is getting much younger. Gilmore will join second-year players Aaron Williams and Justin Rogers, as well as 2012 fourth-rounder Ron Brooks in an offseason battle to set the depth chart.

"Our defense has gone through a number of changes since the end of last season and we feel that it’s necessary to give these young corners the opportunity to be in the lineup,” Nix said.

The Bills still have five-year veteran Leodis McKelvin and 10-year veteran Terrence McGee, who is recovering from a torn patellar tendon, on the roster as corners.

"Business is Business no feelings move on and continue to grind Thanks for all the support #billsmafia the Grind Continues," Florence tweeted Friday.
