The Buffalo Bills' defense sacked Andrew Luck four times, picked him off once and held the Colts' run game to 3 yards a carry.
Also, Buffalo's ground game gained 5.9 yards of its own. The Bills just needed Ryan Fitzpatrick to deliver. And he didn't.
Fitzpatrick missed a pair of would-be touchdown passes in the first half and was inaccurate for most of the game, yet he still had a chance to make up for it with the Bills down 20-13 in the fourth quarter.
Fitzpatrick threw an interception to Tom Zbikowski on Buffalo's second-to-last drive and was fortunate to have Zbikowski cough the ball up on a great effort play by Stevie Johnson. But with a second chance on a brand new drive that started at his own 45-yard line, Fitzpatrick went four-and-out, and the Bills never saw the ball again.
"I thought the defense played well enough to win the ball game," Bills coach Chan Gailey said after the game. "We didn't execute offensively well enough... We had some opportunities and didn't take advantage of opportunities when we get them."
Fitzpatrick finished the game completing 17-for-33 passes for 180 yards, a touchdown pass to Lee Smith and the pick.
The Bills, who fell to 4-7 with the loss, once again struggled in the red zone, going 1-for-3 inside the 20. They converted on just four of 13 third downs.
"We're having problems right now (in the red zone)," Fitzpatrick said. "... We missed a couple opportunities."
