Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a game-losing interception in the final seconds of the Buffalo Bills' loss to the New England Patriots Sunday. But unlike most of Buffalo's mistakes in the passing game, this one wasn't his fault.
From the 15-yard line, Fitzpatrick dropped back to pass with 28 seconds to go, needing a touchdown and an extra point to win the game.
Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty dropped into coverage, and Bills receiver T.J. Graham headed on his route. But Fitzpatrick expected Graham to cut in front of McCourty, and he threw the ball accordingly. Meanwhile Graham ran behind McCourty, who made an easy interception to seal the game. “It was a good pass, I should have made that play," Graham said. "I take blame for that one. That might be why I don’t get on the field as much. ”
Graham's right. Despite his potentially useful world-class speed, the rookie hasn't gotten a whole lot of playing time since being drafted in the third round.
Bills coach Chan Gailey has stated repeatedly through training camp, preseason and the regular season that Graham makes too many mental errors in practice. We took his word for it, and now we see what he was talking about.
Graham has hauled in 15 passes and has been targeted 26 times. Though he was brought in to stretch the field on the perimeter, he doesn't have a reception longer than 19 yards.
