Greg McElroy is the starting quarterback for the New York Jets -- for now.
Less than a day after Mark Sanchez threw four interceptions and mishandled a critical snap at the end of the Jets' demoralizing 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Jets coach Rex Ryan handed over signal-calling duties to McElroy. (photo: slgckgc, Flickr)
Tim Tebow had been the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart pretty much the entire season, but Ryan insisted starting McElroy "is what is best for our team" in Gang Green's now-meaningless bout with the San Diego Chargers Sunday.
There's absolutely no question that Sanchez had to see the bench after the playoff-deterring loss. After being on the rise his rookie and sophomore seasons, and even his his third year, Sanchez has completely come apart at the seams in his fourth year due to crumbling confidence and a depleted skill position corps around him.
Going with McElroy was the right move, as well. McElroy is a true quarterback who can run a normal (if we could call it that) offensive system, and he'll be around next season as either a backup or a competitor for the starting gig, so the Jets need to see what he can do.
Tebow doesn't fit that mold at all, and it's clear the Jets are just riding out the season with him before he leaves New York via a trade or release.
Ryan told Sanchez Sunday night he'd be making a change at quarterback but said he didn't make an official decision on who would start next week until Monday.
