That. Just. Happened. McElroy out, Sanchez to start

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Mark Sanchez will start in the New York Jets' Week 17 bout with the Buffalo Bills Sunday. Whoa.

Coach Rex Ryan made the announcement Thursday after telling the media Greg McElroy, who got his first career start last week, sustained a concussion in a game that saw him get sacked 11 times and hit some more.

Ryan said he found out about the concussion at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, according to Brian Costello of the NY Post, as McElroy didn't come forward about headaches and concussion-like symptoms until days after the game. (photo: Marianne O' Leary, Flickr)

Ryan pulled Sanchez and Tim Tebow out of meetings to inform them of the situation.

"Obviously Tim's not happy about that, as you'd expect," Ryan said, via Kristian Dyer.

Ryan explained to reporters that he felt more comfortable giving Sanchez, who was benched a week and a half ago in favor of McElroy, the nod because of his familiarity with the Bills and the short preparation time between Thursday and Sunday's game.

Sanchez threw three touchdowns and an interception, completing 70.4 percent of his passes, in the Jets' Week 1 drubbing of the Bills.

This development is just the latest in a series of bizarre, can't-make-it-up events that have defined the Jets' turbulent 2012 season.
