Buffalo's acquisition of the seven-year veteran not only readjusts its depth chart, but it also changes the look of its approach to the draft and ends talk of a possible Kolb-Marty Mornhinweg reunion via the New York Jets.
Regardless of what you think of Kolb, the Bills absolutely needed a better option than Tarvaris Jackson as their starter, so it's already an upgrade from what they had a day ago. Kolb most recently battled the injury bug playing behind a porous Arizona Cardinals offensive line but showed some flashes during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Also, the Bills were poised to probably reach for a quarterback early in the 2013 draft despite the mediocre pool of candidates. Now, they can at least explore other options, whether it's taking what's left in the second or third round, or riding Kolb as a stopgap before drafting the position in 2014.
They could also still take a quarterback in the first round while displaying less urgency to other teams. Maybe they could trade back, or up. The point is, they have some options.
Across the state, Kolb looked like a potential candidate to unseat Mark Sanchez as the starter in Mornhinweg's West Coast system. Mornhinweg, who coached Kolb when the pair was employed by the Eagles, was hired by the Jets this year.
But once again, it appears as if Gang Green's starting signal-caller job is Sanchez's to lose. He was already essentially put in the driver's seat by Mornhinweg and has been working with another Mornhinweg student, Jeff Garcia, this offseason to learn some of the nuances of his new offense.
I've been saying all along that I can't see Sanchez not starting in 2013, but Kolb was the one factor that would've made me veer a little.
