Entering the 2012 preseason, Garrard was the favorite to win the Dolphins' starting job over rookie Ryan Tannehill and incumbent Matt Moore. With the Jets, Garrard had reasonable competition for the No. 1 gig in the much-maligned Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith.
But in both cases, his knee ailment sealed his fate.
"Having to call it quits," said in a text to SNY's Adam Schein, according to Newsday. "My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do."
New Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg seems to have taken a liking to Sanchez, and we all know how head coach Rex Ryan feels about him. And when you factor in the new standard that a early-round rookie quarterback will get every chance to succeed, Garrard was probably unofficially the No. 3 quarterback on the May depth chart, anyway.
Maybe that factored into his decision.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 35-year-old Garrard compiled an 89-54 career TD-to-INT ratio while boasting a 61.6 percent completion rate.
