Jets cap voluntary OTAs with voluntary paintball

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Skipping the football part of OTAs is one thing, but skipping the paintball part is another.

On the last day of the New York Jets' scheduled voluntary practices, Rex Ryan had his squad shed the gym shorts for sweat pants and the gloves for paintball guns, according to multiple media reports and a handful of Twitter posts (some still existing, some not) by players Thursday.

It was the latest of Ryan's series of team-sanctioned bonding activities he's organized since taking over as the team's head coach in 2009 and arguably the most-fitting photo op for standout center Nick Mangold (third from the right in the photo, courtesy of Jordan White's Twitter account).

The Jets, who are chock full of new faces -- as well as old faces learning new systems -- return to offseason action June 11 for mandatory minicamp, which runs through June 13. There will most certainly be no recess-like playtime in that period.

And once again, we pride ourselves in not using the tired, predictable "circus" word some in the media lazily use in every Jets story. That last sentence excluded.
