'Shocked' Driesbach has 'no idea' why Bills fired him

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Buffalo Bills abruptly fired inside linebackers coach Chuck Driesbach Monday, and Driesbach is still trying to figure out why.

"I have no idea what happened,” Driesbach said Monday, via The Intelligencer (Pa.). “I don't know if they felt like I did a (poor) job or somebody better became available. I don't know and probably never will."

Driesbach said he was called into head coach Doug Marrone's office and told "they just wanted to change the dynamic of the staff."

The 61-year-old spent just one season working under Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, both of whom were also in their first seasons at their respective posts. The Bills didn't fire fellow linebackers coach Jim O'Neil.

"It's a little bit of a shocker," Driesbach said. ". . . I was treated wonderfully by everybody in that building, then this bombshell fell."

Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso had a potential Rookie of the Year campaign working under Driesbach, though the Bills' defense as a whole struggled against the run.

With O'Neil still on the staff and Pettine's history as a linebackers coach, maybe the Bills were just consolidating. But if that were the case, you think they'd just tell him that.
