The New York Jets experienced a bit of a hangover from the departure of longtime special teams coach Mike Westhoff last offseason.
Westhoff's protege in Ben Kotwica was underwhelming in his first season leading the group, though the underwhelming personnel he was working with deserved some blame, as well.
Either way, Kotwica bolted earlier this offseason to assume the same position with the Washington Redskins, and Wednesday, the Jets officially announced his replacement.
Thomas McGaughey, who spent the last three seasons coaching special teams at LSU, will take over as the Jets' third special teams coach in as many seasons.
McGaughey's most recent NFL experience dates back to the 2010-11 season, when he capped off a four-year term with the New York Giants that included a Super Bowl ring in 2007.
Prior to that, McGaughey was an assistant with the Denver Broncos, the University of Houston, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe. He played defensive back at Houston in the early 90s and was the team's special teams captain as a senior.
After going undrafted, he spent some time on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad in 1996.
