Santonio Holmes has the fourth-biggest salary cap number for the New York Jets in 2014, and two of the three players ahead of him are expected to be released prior to the start of free agency.
Make it three.
Holmes, who is slated to make nearly $11 million next season (according to overthecap.com), isn't expected back with the team next year -- at least where he stands now financially, as he'd save the Jets upwards of $8 million if they were to cut him.
Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reported Friday that Gang Green is already banking on that extra money.
"Holmes isn’t part of the team's future plans," Mehta wrote. "The Jets have already included the $8.25 million in savings it will get by cutting Holmes in the pool of available money for free agency, according to sources."With Holmes gone, the Jets are set to be players in the medium-to-upper-end crop of free agent wideouts. That includes Jeremy Maclin of the Philadelphia Eagles and Emmanuel Sanders of the Pittsburgh Steelers, both of whom will reportedly be pursued by the Jets.
It goes without saying that New York certainly needs to upgrade its pass-catching corps. The Jets will certainly address the need in the draft, but there's no question they'll also add one, if not two, potential starting receivers via the free market.
