The New York Jets have a legitimate quarterback competition on the card this summer, as veteran Michael Vick was brought in to push, and possibly unseat, incumbent second-year signal-caller Geno Smith.
At this point in the offseason, coach Rex Ryan appears to have his favorite.
"It's going to be really interesting to watch that competition unfold," Ryan said Wednesday, via NJ.com. Geno Smith is going to be hard to beat out. I've said that for a long time and that’s how I feel about it. But it is going to be a great competition."
Smith is the by-default leader in the clubhouse simply because he finished last season with the job, and did so rather impressively.
Vick, however, could easily rise above Smith as early as OTAs, given his ample experience in Marty Mornhinweg's offensive system, general football wisdom and superior skill set. All of those things could be of benefit to Smith, but in the meantime, could also mean Smith holds a clipboard for most of the year.
"It's just good to have a guy to compete with like Mike," Smith said last week, via the NY Post. "We're going to compete. We're not going to say, 'Hey, you’re the starter.' And we'll leave it at that. We want to get better."
