McCoy assures Vick will be good for Jets' locker room

BY NICK ST. DENIS

LeSean McCoy has a clear favorite in the New York Jets' quarterback battle.

Shocker alert: It's not the incumbent.

"[Michael Vick] is going to be the starting quarterback this year," the Philadelphia Eagles tailback told the NY Post's Bart Hubbuch Monday of his former teammate. "He's way better than Geno Smith. Way better. That's no contest."

McCoy's bias is clear, but it's also fair. Maybe not the "way better, no contest" part, but that Vick is probably the favorite.

Smith may be the by-default starter from a mini-camp depth chart standpoint (if there is such a thing), given how he finished the season and Rex Ryan's pro-Smith tone after Gang Green signed Vick.

But Vick's familiarity in Marty Mornhinweg's offensive system, experience, skill set and presence will be tough for Smith to overcome, especially if Vick somehow can stay healthy. Or, it could be a great test for Smith that could take him to the next level.

And regardless of who is calling signals on game day, McCoy insists Vick will exude captain-like qualities throughout his time in New York.

"He'll definitely be a leader in the locker room," McCoy said. "Who smoothed over a lot of that Riley Cooper incident? Mike Vick, a great player who's been through some negative moments and is now positive about it.

"He's a great [veteran], and he’ll help the team out in that way.”
