Patriots give former Dolphins tailback Brown a tryout

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New England Patriots knew Ronnie Brown before Tuesday. After Tuesday, they know him a little better.

New England hosted the former Miami Dolphins tailback for a tryout this week, according to multiple media reports. The 32-year-old Brown spent the past two seasons with the San Diego Chargers after a year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

After getting drafted by the Dolphins in 2005, he spent six years in Miami.

The 32-year-old Brown, listed at 6-feet, 223 pounds, averaged 3.5 yards in limited action last year behind Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead. He's a solid pass-catching back, snagging a career-high 49 receptions in 2012.

Brown, who hasn't taken more than 46 handoffs in a year since rushing 200 times in 2010 during his last season as a Dolphin.

The Patriots are pretty saturated with talent in the the running back room as of now, and almost all of that talent is of the young variety. Brown would provide a veteran presence among the group, but he'd still have to put together a solid summer to earn even a backup's backup job.
