It was only a matter of time before the New York Jets' draft turned in the direction of the pass-catchers.
It started Friday night when the team scooped up the big tight end out of Texas Tech in Jace Amaro, and it started back up early in the third day of draft action, as Gang Green selected a pair of wideouts in the fourth round.
New York first nabbed the speedy Jalen Saunders out of Oklahoma at No. 104 overall before picking up the bigger UCLA wideout Shaquelle Evans at No. 115 overall.
And all of a sudden, the Jets have a stable of young route-runners they hope can grow with second-year quarterback Geno Smith while possibly spending a season at the disposal of veteran Michael Vick.
The 5-foot-8 Saunders, who could step right in as a returner, told NJ.com that he currently weighs in at 175 pounds, nearly 20 pounds more than his listed playing weight last season.
"I would describe my playing style like a gorilla," Saunders said, via NJ.com. "I’m a savage on that field. I would say between a gorilla and a terrier, a pet dog or a terrier. They’re real small and people don’t expect too much from them. They always like to fight and always like to play around.
"That’s just the type of player I am. I’m real feisty."
Evans, meanwhile, stands at 6-2, 213 pounds. He was a little less creative in describing his playing style.
"I’m a guy that can go out there and do whatever you need me to do: catch a check down pass, catch a deep pass and a guy that’s also going to block for you and just be an ultimate team player," Evans said.
Saunders was a second team All-Big 12 selection after recording 61 catches for 729 yards and eight touchdowns in 2013. Evans caught 47 passes for 709 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013 and led the Bruins in receptions each of the past two seasons.

The Jets also later added Nebraska receiver Quincy Enunwa with the No. 209 overall selection in the sixth round. Enunwa was elected the Huskers' Offensive MVP in 2013 after leading the team with 753 receiving yards and setting a school record with 12 touchdowns.
