Kicker Hrapmann joins Dolphins to spell Sturgis

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Just because the injured Caleb Sturgis doesn't have competition in camp, it doesn't mean the Miami Dolphins plan to go it alone without him.

The team announced Tuesday it has signed kicker Danny Hrapmann and waived linebacker Ryan Rau.

Sturgis is battling a groin ailment and apparently isn't a go Friday night when Miami makes the short trip north to Atlanta for the preseason opener, which likely prompted the Dolphins to bring in Hrapmann.

The 5-9, 164-pound Hrapmann joins the Dolphins from the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the 2014 off-season prior to being released over the weekend.

Hrapmann originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft but was released prior to the season.

An all-conference and All-America performer at Southern Mississippi, Hrapmann made 51 of 69 field goals and 126 of 131 point after attempts for the Golden Eagles.
