Rex: Our fans were better than our team today

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New York Jets are off to a 1-0 start to the season, even if their head coach wasn't so thrilled with the way Gang Green's 19-14 home victory played out.

"Our fans were better than our team today," Rex Ryan said, via the AP.

The Jets amassed 11 penalties for 105 yards, turning the ball over twice and failing to snag a turnover of their own. Those numbers didn't sit well with Ryan.

"It has to get better for us to do what we want to do," Ryan said.

Despite those words, it wasn't all bad for the Jets.

Second-year quarterback Geno Smith lost a fumble and threw an interception, but he was otherwise very productive against the Raiders, connecting on 23 of 28 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He added 38 yards on 10 carries.

On the backs of Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson, the Jets totaled 212 yards on the ground, highlighted by a 72-yard scoring scamper by Ivory. The Jets were equally effective against the run on defense, holding Oakland's ground game to 25 total yards.

New York, however, failed to intercept rookie quarterback Derek Carr and sacked him just twice. The Jets gave up two sacks of their won.

"We'll take it," Ryan said. "I'm not very happy with it, but it's a victory."
