Gostkowski nearing Vinatieri's Patriots record

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Stephen Gostkowski is seven points away from becoming the second-most prolific points-scorer in the history of the New England Patriots franchise.

With 1,124 career points, he's about to pass Gino Cappelletti in that category. Then its on to the all-time franchise record, currently held by Adam Vinatieri and his 1,158 points with the Patriots.

Gostkowski will face off against the now-Indianapolis Colts kicker tonight--a guy Gostkowski obviously looks up to.

"The guy is unbelievable," Gostkowski told ESPN Boston last week. "I've heard the stories about how hard he works out and all that stuff. To be able to be that good, I don't know how he feels, but he doesn't make it look like he feels old.

"... I admire every kicker in the NFL. I know how hard it is to be successful on a week-in and week-out basis and no one has done it better than Adam. He deserves all the accolades and respect in the world."

Thirty-four points shy of the franchise record and with seven games to go, it's very likely Gostkowski eclipses the mark before season's end. He the accolade to the Patriots' success.

"It's a product of being on a good team," he said. "As a specialist, you're only as good as the opportunities you're given."

Vinatieri, who has been with the Colts since 2006, has 2,096 points in his career. He'll turn 42 years old just a couple days before the new year.
