Jets will go back to Geno Smith against Dolphins

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The first thought is: Who cares?

The second thought is: Well, someone has to play quarterback for the New York Jets Monday night against the Miami Dolphins.

That someone will be second-year signal-caller Geno Smith, the team announced. Coach Rex Ryan met with the quarterbacks Wednesday morning and informed them of the decision, which will give Smith his first start since being benched a month ago.

Smith's initial benching was during the first of two Buffalo Bills games, when he came out of the gate throwing more interceptions (3) than completions (2). Since then, Vick took over and was slightly more effective, but he came completely undone against--you guessed it--the Bills Monday night.

Vick was harassed via the pass rush all game long and completed just seven of 19 pass attempts with an interception. Smith came in late and connected on 10 of 12 passes for 89 yards. Yippee. Go Geno.

Gang Green fell to a dismal 2-9 with the loss.

So this week, with Ryan a goner after the season and general manager John Idzik fighting for his Jets life, the team is going with the GM's guy.

We'll see how that one pans out.
