Turnovers critical in Pats-Packers heavyweight battle

BY NICK ST. DENIS

When the New England Patriots take the field at Lambeau Field Sunday to face the Green Bay Packers, fans will be treated to two stout defenses and two better offenses.

The game pairs arguably the NFL's top two teams, and a big reason for that is their ability to protect the football while forcing opponents to do the opposite.

The Packers are the top-ranked team in terms of turnover differential at plus-15. The Patriots are second at plus-11.

Green Bay has snagged 23 takeaways (15 INT, 8 FUM) and has turned the ball over just eight times (4 INT, 4 FUM). New England, meanwhile, has taken it away 20 times (12 INT, 8 FUM) with just nine giveaways (6 INT, 3 FUM) on the other side of the ball.

The Packers are second in the NFL in takeaways, while the Patriots are seventh. They rank No. 1 and 2 in giveaways.

The point is, one turnover either way could be huge in this one, as both teams obviously put a high premium on that factor.
