Belichick flips switch on Pats' New Year's Day plans

BY NICK ST. DENIS

My high school hockey coach used to schedule practice extremely early on New Years Day to--at the very least--cut into our inevitable excitement the night before. We still puked after sprints.

If only our coach was Bill Belichick.

Belichick called off the New England Patriots' scheduled practice Thursday, a little curveball for the AFC's top seed, which has a bye this weekend before hosting a to-be-determined conference squad next weekend in the divisional round.

“Definitely a surprise,” Pro Bowl special-teamer Matthew Slater told Patriots.com Thursday. Slater said he was sleeping by 10:30 p.m. the night before, in preparation for a normal full work day, and missed the ball drop.

Oh well.

New England still proceeded with normal team and positional meetings, though the physical break, which will stretch through the remainder of the holiday weekend, was apparently well-deserved after a week of solid practice.
