Linebacker Brandon Spikes is currently a free agent. If he had it his way though, he'd back working out at One Bills Drive tomorrow.
The 27-year-old is looking for a new contract, but Buffalo hasn't budged on their plans if Spikes was to come back. As Doug Whaley noted back in February, he and Rex Ryan see him in a diminished role if he returns, while Spikes still feels he can contribute on an every-down basis.
"For the most part my agent has been doing a great job with that," Spikes said of the process. "I just told them that I’m ready to go to whoever wants me. They’re going to get a great player, a complete player, a leader, a guy that plays the game the right way with a lot of fire.
"Of course I’d like to go back, but you know how it goes in this league. Guys with a new staff they like their guys and everybody understands that. I love Buffalo."
Spikes made $3 million with the Bills last season, but Whaley's been pretty clear that he doesn't want to pay that kind of money, particularly with players such as Preston Brown emerging. The team did lose Kiko Alonso to Philadelphia in the McCoy deal, a move that leaves room for some veteran presence if Whaley and Ryan decide to go that route.
